May 29th, 2018 – West Lake was dispatched at 1156 to the intersection of West 16th St and Peninsula Drive for a reported vehicle accident involving a passenger vehicle and two tractor trailers. Chief 490 responded and dispatch advised that there was a hazmat leak on scene. Engine 482 and Engine 483 responded within minutes of dispatch. Chief 490 arrived on location and reported one vehicle into a tractor trailer with heavy damage and an active diesel leak. Upon arrival of the Engines, crews worked to stop the diesel leak from entering the storm water drains using hazmat booms and absorbent. Approximately 125-150 gallons of diesel entered the drains prior to the fire department arriving. Crews made quick work and contained the remaining diesel to the parking lot. Crews plugged the saddle tank of the tractor trailer to prevent any more diesel from leaking.
Chief 490 requested Hazmat to the scene as well as Millcreek Township EMA Hazmat Trailer. West Ridge Fire Department assisted with an engine crew and manned a hand line. Diesel was found two blocks down in the storm water drains and all were packed with booms to prevent any diesel from entering any further drains.
